The University of Central Lancashire’s School of Dentistry is celebrating a landmark achievement. The school has officially been open for ten years, and staff have plenty to toast, including the successful graduation of 224 dentists.

When the UCLan school was established, it was one of just two new dental schools to open in England in the last 100 years. Since opening its doors a decade ago, the centre has provided first-class training facilities for more than 220 dentists and treatment for more than 23,000 patients. Around 60 graduates have chosen to stay in Preston after graduating and many more are working in the North West.

The university invested £5.25 million in the development of the school, which boasts a state of the art ‘phantom head’ suite to enable trainee dentists to hone their skills. The centre is also one of the only schools in the country to have its own clinic on-site. Having access to this facility enables students to gain real-life experience of treating patients before they start their careers.

To celebrate the milestone, the university hosted an anniversary event. Guests included current students, alumni and honorary professor and the deputy chief dental officer at NHS England, Prof Eric Rooney. Prof Rooney praised the university, stating that the aims set out when the school first opened had been achieved and lauding the creation of a “vibrant dental academic community.”
