University Helps in the Fight against Smoking

The University of Bolton has teamed up with Vaknall Innovations to create and produce their stop smoking device the Quit-Clip.

The device is an intriguing invention. The Quit-Clip aids smokers by punching small ventilation holes into the filters of cigarettes. The holes then act as ventilators, which allows more oxygen to enter the cigarette and then enter the smoker’s bloodstream and removes an amount of damaging toxins such as tar, nicotine and carbon monoxide.

The device can punch one hole into six cigarettes at a time and the plan is to slowly increase the number of holes in each cigarette, decreasing the intake levels of the harmful and addictive toxins within cigarettes.

As well as the device itself, the product comes with a guide to quitting, to boost the chances of the smoker’s success. A more recent addition to the package has come from the University’s partnership with Vaknall, an online support group, who help keep up the motivation for those trying to quit cigarettes.

Vaknall Innovations is a Cheshire based company that specialises in creating innovations and supporting those made by others.

The Quit-Clip was designed by Product Design lecturer and consultant Charly Styles from the University of Bolton. Charly’s idea received financial help from Vaknall Innovations, who were able to bring on board a £3,000 grant from the European Research and Development Fund.

The product has proved popular and now that a finished product has been made, the device has found its first client in the shape of Lloyds Pharmacy.

Charly Styles has also expressed his pride in the University being so closely involved with the production even after the designing of the product had been finished, “The product posed its challenges; creating the first model was quite testing, but this was a great product to be involved in and we’re pleased to have been involved in so many stages.”

Both the University and Vaknall Innovations are said to be pleased with the product and initial forecasting’s of the products success in store seem very bright.
