Unilever has launched a new oral health campaign to encourage Nigerians to look after their teeth and gums.

The Live, Learn and Laugh Oral Care Project was launched in association with the Nigerian Dental Association and the World Dental Federation and will aim to get people involved in oral health and raise awareness of the importance of good oral health.

President of the Nigerian Dental Association, Dr Olufemi Orebanjo, spoke at the launch of the campaign, highlighting the health implications of poor oral health, as well as the educational and social impact of oral health problems. Every year, thousands of school hours are lost as a result of oral health diseases and studies have linked bacteria associated with gum disease to an increased risk of serious illnesses, including heart disease and strokes.

Dr Bimpe Adebiyi, the Chief Dental Surgeon of Nigeria, said that it was extremely important to raise awareness of oral health, as many people may still be unaware of the dangers associated with poor oral hygiene and oral health diseases.

The Unilever campaign will help to educate and inform people about oral health and it is hoped that this will have a positive effect on standards of oral health in Nigeria.
