We hear about the development of bio-compatible materials in dentistry, such as the use of zirconia in crown dental restorations, but who contributes to the development of these products?

Professor Jonathan Knowles, chief of Biomaterials and Tissue Engineering at the University College London (UCL) Eastman Dental Institute, is such a pioneer that recently received the 2010 UK Society for Biomaterials Biocompatibles Endowed Award for his significant research contribution to the UK Biomaterials field and the Bioscience industry.

Biocompatibles Ltd fund the endowment originally formed by Dennis Chapman, CChem FRSC, FRS (1927-1999), and Professor Knowles is to receive this award during the upcoming UK Society of Biomaterials (UKSB) Conference in Glasgow during the 1st-2nd of July 2010. Professor Knowles’s will also present a lecture on Biocompatibles at this event. Not only contributing to developments in dental biomaterials, academics like Professor Knowles also inspires knowledge in dentistry through writing chapters in books, such as a new concise guide to Orofacial Pain.

Previous recipients of the Award include Professor David Grant of University of Nottingham in 2009; Dr Sanjukta Deb of King’s College London in 2008; Dr Rachel Williams of University of Liverpool in 2007; and Professor John Fisher of University of Leeds in 2006; amongst other. Universities all over the UK get involved and the UK Society of Biomaterials (UKSB) Conference aims to stimulate research and innovation in Bioscience through annually encouraging students to partake in presentations.
