The UK has claimed second place in a list of European countries boasting the highest oral health standards.

A new study, which was designed to evaluate the dental health of citizens from more than 25 European countries revealed that people in the UK have the second best teeth behind Italy. Germany was tied for second with Spain in third.

The survey evaluated three key categories, with the UK placing 6th overall. The categories included ‘dental health’, ‘dental facilities’ and ‘negative influences on dental health’. The dental health segment was evaluated by calculating the average number of decayed, lost and filled teeth in children aged up to 12 years old. The UK rate was 0.5. The worst-performing country was Slovakia, with a rate of 5.1.

Although the UK performed well in the dental health category, there were significant weaknesses in other areas, including the second-highest level of sugar consumption. The average person consumes 39kg of sugar per year in the UK, which is almost double the figure for Spain. The UK also has a smaller proportion of dentists than other European countries, with 54 dentists per 100,000 patients. This compares to 77 in Italy, 82 in Germany and 125 in Greece.

The study, which analysed data from 24 European Union nations plus the UK and Switzerland, was conducted by Qunomedical.
