UK Dentists To Display Elvis’ Crown To Raise Mouth Cancer Awareness

A host of dental practices in the UK will display Elvis Presley’s crown in a bid to raise awareness of mouth cancer.

The famous crown, which was purchased at auction by Canadian dentist, Dr Michael Zuk, will be touring the UK to try and get people talking about mouth cancer. Dr Zuk bought the crown, which was made by Henry Weiss, in 2012 for around £6,500. He also owns John Lennon’s crown and recently revealed plans to try and clone the singer using DNA from the tooth.

The crown will be travelling to twelve dental practices around the country during the month of May. Each clinic will be hosting a special Elvis Day with fancy dress, games and activities and free oral cancer screening will be offered.

There were more than 6,500 new cases of mouth cancer diagnosed in the UK last year and 1.985 people died from the disease. Statistics show that the disease is becoming increasingly prevalent year on year and survival rates have not improved significantly, as with other forms of disease. Dentists are hoping that educating people about the causes, risk factors and symptoms of mouth cancer will help to ensure that more cases are diagnosed at an early stage, when the disease is more treatable.

The tooth has already completed a tour of the UK; in 2012, it was displayed at 16 practices.
