Two Hundred Jobs To Be Created At A New Dental Laboratory In Yorkshire

The managing director of Genix Healthcare has announced the opening of a brand new dental laboratory in Leeds, creating 200 new jobs.

In recent years, the trend has been for laboratory work to be sent overseas and the news is great for the UK industry. Mustafa Mohammed confirmed that he will be investing £1 million in the new laboratory, which will provide training facilities for apprentices, as well as state of the art manufacturing facilities.

Mr Mohammed said that the new Sparkle Laboratory would be 16,000 square feet, making it one of the largest laboratories in the UK.

The owner of Genix Healthcare, which owns 24 dental practices across the country, has also invested heavily in producing anti-malaria drugs through Genix Pharma, which is based in Pakistan. Mr Mohammed said that he deals with Chinese companies but does not source materials from the country because of inconsistencies with the quality of the materials.

Many dentists are unaware of the quality of the crowns and other restorations they order because many small laboratories send orders overseas to save money. In recent months, there have been reports that crowns from abroad contain lead and are much poorer quality than those manufactured in the UK.

Mr Mohammed said that the investment is good news for the UK industry, which has suffered in recent years. The number of dental technicians working in the UK has fallen from 10,000-12,000 a decade ago to just 5,000-6,000 today.

Dr Barry Cockcroft, chief dental officer for England, spoke at the launch of the laboratory and said that he was “delighted” to be there to witness investment in the UK market. He was also happy to catch a glimpse of the amazing facilities on offer for technicians and apprentices.
