A husband and wife team from Truro is preparing to travel to Kenya as part of a charity dental mission organised by Smile Star.

Dentist Andrew Ridout and his wife Lisa, practice manager and dental nurse, will travel to Kenya in November. The couple will spend two weeks working as part of a voluntary team. For the first week, the team will be based at a local hospital and they will be running clinics on weekdays. During the second week, the volunteers will be travelling around schools and communities in Samburu, providing dental treatment and helping to educate people about oral health issues.

Andrew and Lisa decided to find out more about voluntary projects after meeting with Dr Mitesh Badiani, the founder of Smile Star, at his clinic in Ashburton. The couple liked the sound of the work done by the charity and recognised the importance of such projects. They are now looking forward to their adventure this coming November.

Andrew said that he and his wife were very impressed when they met Dr Badiani and they were excited to find out more about upcoming projects and how they could get involved with this “amazing organisation.” Now, the countdown is on and they are getting ready for the trip and looking forward to getting out there to help make a difference. Conditions in Kenya will be very different to those the team is used to in Truro and they are aware that it will be a mental and physical challenge.

Smile Star was established with the aim of providing dental care to poor communities in Africa and India and also to ex-marines in the UK. The charity organises regular visits to underserved areas and dental professionals devote their time and expertise free of charge.
