Tragedy at the University of North Carolina as a Dental Student is Among 3 Killed in Shooting

Staff and students at the University of North Carolina are in mourning after three people were killed in a shooting outside an apartment block in Chapel Hill.

The shooting took place on Tuesday 10th February and a suspect has been named as 46 year old Stephen Hicks, from Chapel Hill. He has been detained by police.

Among the victims are 23 year old dental student, Deah Shaddy Barakat and his wife, Yusor Abu-Salha, who was 21 years old and planning to start a dental course at the university in the autumn. Razan Abu-Salha, Yusor’s sister, was also killed aged just 19 years old. The couple had married in December and were hugely popular members of the college community.

In a statement released by the School of Dentistry, Dean Jane A Weintraub, said that Deah would be remembered for his kind heart and sincerity. A keen basketball player and follower, he had many friends and was committed to his dental studies. Deah and Yusor were newlyweds and Yusor was known to staff and students through her work with the Mission of Mercy. Everyone was looking forward to her joining the school later this year. The university has offered sentiments and support to the families and will provide assistance for fellow students.

The American Dental Association also released a statement offering the “thoughts and prayers of the dental community” to the friends and family members of the three victims.
