Four of Scotland’s leading dentists have been nominated for the Scottish Dental Lifetime Achievement Award 2012.

The award is designed to honour those who have given their all to the profession and made a real difference to dentistry over the course of their career. The individuals are nominated by fellow colleagues and industry professionals.

Those nominated this year include Dr Graham McKirdy from Glasgow, Dr Jim Rennie CBE and Dr Huw Mathewson CBE from Edinburgh and Professor William Saunders from Aberdeen.

Dr McKirdy has worked in practices in Glasgow and Hamilton for the last 21 years and has been a committed member of the British Dental Association’s Scottish Dental Committee since 1991. In 1997 he was elected chairman and became executive in 2003. Dr McKirdy is currently chairing the NHS pensions debate on behalf of the British Dental Association and he also dedicates time to teaching at Glasgow Dental Hospital.

Professor William Saunders has made a huge difference to teaching in Scotland over the course of several years and is Dean of Dundee Dental School, chair of the Dental Schools Council and a council member for the Royal College of Surgeons.

Dr Jim Rennie CBE retired in March last year having made a significant contribution to dentistry in Scotland. Dr Rennie was Dean of postgraduate dental education in Scotland and was heavily involved in the allocation of resources and the national dental strategy.

Dr Huw Mathewson CBE had held a number of important positions within the dental field, including President of the General Dental Council and his commitment and expertise were recognised in the 2010 New Year’s Honours List.
