Toowomba Man Undergoes Dental Surgery Thanks To Generosity Of Local People

A man from Toowomba has undergone dental surgery thanks to the generosity of local people, many of whom he has never met.

Anthony Carney appealed for help in the local press last year after his dental funding was scrapped; he was facing a two year wait for treatment and was suffering severe pain, as well as the prospect of living with rotting teeth for a long period of time.

Mr Carney’s story obviously tugged on the heartstrings of local people and they came forward in their dozens to support him and help him to raise enough money for treatment. Dr Harry Margret, from the East Bentleigh Dental Group in Melbourne, agreed to waive his fees but he still had a funding shortfall and his mother wrote to the local newspaper to ask for help; local people raised $1,000 and this morning he underwent extensive dental surgery to remove 23 teeth, including all his top teeth and six of his bottom teeth.

Mame du Bois, one of Mr Carney’s friends, travelled to Melbourne to support him through surgery and said that the procedure would not have been possible without the kindness of local people, many of whom are complete strangers.

Despite the good news for her friend, Ms du Bois said that the situation facing people who were previously covered by the Chronic Disease Dental Scheme, was very worrying; many people who previously had access to dental funding now have nothing and they cannot afford to pay for the treatment they need. She added that the government had made a mistake by abolishing the scheme and said that “the Dr Marget’s of this world can only do so much.”
