Tooth-whitening for people with dry mouths

Worried that your dry mouth could prevent you from getting your teeth whitened?
Well think again.
Some dental patients are often discouraged from getting teeth whitening treatments because they have a dry mouth due to taking various medications.
However, researchers are now suggesting, in a report by the journal Gerontology, that dry mouth suffers can use some hydrogen peroxide based whitening strips.
ABCnews reported that Dr. Athena Papas, from Tufts University, Boston, said that decreased creation of saliva (dry mouth) could traditionally make some patients bad candidates for whitening procedures.
But, after testing more than 40 adults using ‘dry mouth drugs’ the doctor and her colleges found that 10% hydrogen peroxide whitening strips worked on these patients.

All the participants that used the strips reported reduced yellowness and greater brightness in their teeth. Some of the patients experienced irritation of the mouth and increased sensitivity of the teeth but none of them withdrew from the study.
Dr. Papas, who now believes that teeth whitening is the most common aesthetic dental procedure, said that this clinical trial shows that peroxide-based strip whitening is a viable treatment for older patients or people that produce less saliva.
