Three new NHS dental surgeries set to open in Birmingham

Three new NHS dental surgeries are set to open in Birmingham.

The announcement comes in light of poor figures relating to access to dental services in the poorest areas of the city, with many people being forced to wait for long periods of time for treatment and others claiming that they cannot register with an NHS dentist. Last year, health officials came under fire during a public consultation about dental services in the city and subsequently money has been ploughed into the area.

The first of the new surgeries opened in Great Barr last week and already has more than two hundred patients wishing to register; it is hoped that the surgery will cater for residents of nearby Perry Barr and Oscott, as well as those from Great Barr.

The other surgeries will open soon and it is hoped that they will make a huge difference to dental services in the area; between them, the three practices should provide thousands of NHS places and many people will be able to access local NHS services on their doorsteps without having to worry about travelling long distances or waiting for treatment.

Ros Hamburger, from the Heart of Birmingham Teaching Primary Care Trust, said that local people have raised several areas of concern over the course of the last few years and the trust is working to address these issues. She said that people wanted to see more surgeries, longer opening hours and improved access to emergency care; the three new surgeries will provide these services and hopefully make a significant difference to NHS provision in the Birmingham area. Improvements needed to be made following figures which revealed that the city was underserved.

Patients who wish to find out more about the new surgeries are encouraged to contact the PCT.
