Thousands of people in Brighton and Hove are not registered with an NHS dentist, a review has confirmed.

Figures show that around 147,500 people of Brighton and Hove’s population of 250,000are registered with a dentist, leaving thousands without a dentist. The local health trust admits that some areas of the borough are underserved but insists that there are at least 20 practices in the area currently taking on new NHS patients.

Missing out on regular routine dental appointments poses a risk to oral and general health; regular check-ups help to prevent serious oral health problems and studies have shown that good oral health contributes to good general health.

Health bosses have advised patients to call the dental helpline for a list of practices currently accepting new patients.
