Thieves Take Thousands Of Pounds Worth Of Lead From Dental Firm Roof

Thieves have ransacked the roof of a dental firm in Dundee, causing thousands of pounds worth of damage.

Staff members at Wright Cottrell, which is based at Dunsinane Industrial Estate, only discovered the full extent of the robbery after heavy rain fell, causing several leaks. A spokeswoman for the firm said that once the rain started pouring in from the roof it became clear that something was wrong and on closer inspection it was confirmed that a significant amount of lead had been taken from the roof.

Police were called to the premises and investigations are underway. It is estimated that thieves have caused around £7,000 worth of damage.

To make matters worse, poor weather conditions have hampered attempts to repair the roof and the firm has been putting up with leaks since October 3rd.

This is not the first time the area has been targeted by lead thieves; earlier in the year, almost £5,000 worth of damage was caused to Balgay Parish Church. Lochee library and the local leisure centre have also been targeted and a man was recently jailed for 11 months for stealing lead from Lochlee Primary School.

Alan Brown, a roofing specialist who is assisting with the repairs at Wright Cottrell, explained that that thieves are probably selling the lead on for only a small amount of money, but the cost of repairing the roof and replacing the lead will be significant. As the roof contains asbestos, it cannot be repaired when it is wet and this is why the repair job has taken longer than planned.
