Thief Shouts At Judge For Short Sentence, Which Means He Will Miss Out On Dental Treatment

A thief with more than 200 convictions shouted at a judge when he gave him a short sentence because it means he will not receive free dental treatment while in jail.

Michael Whelan, from Croom in County Limerick, was angered by the sentence given to him by Judge Eugene O’Kelly because he wanted to get dental treatment while he was serving time. Judge O’Kelly gave the 34 year old a one month jail sentence after he admitted to stealing a packet of razors worth 15 Euros from a pharmacy in Limerick on the 4th January; Whelan already has 213 convictions and is currently serving a 6 month sentence resulting from a series of thefts carried out last year.

Before revealing the sentence, Judge O’Kelly asked Mr Whelan’s solicitor, Ted McCarthy if his client was the same person who had shouted at him in court for not issuing a longer sentence the last time he was charged; Mr McCarthy confirmed that it was the same offender and said that the client wanted to stay in prison longer so that he could receive dental treatment.

Whelan has been described as a ‘serial shoplifter’ and it appears that the jail sentence issued to him will do very little to change his ways. Mr Whelan is said to have verbally abused the judge, saying that the sentence “was not sufficient in length.”
