The University of Sheffield has launched a new online dental programme to enable anyone to learn more about dentistry from the comfort of their own home.

The university has joined forces with FutureLearn, the first UK provider of Massive Online Open Courses, which have transformed the way people access education. The aim is to create a range of programmes, which are free and accessible to all.

The new course, known as Discover Dentistry, is designed to be an innovative, interesting and interactive course, which gives people the ability to learn more about dentistry and the impact it has on our lives.

Discover Dentistry enables people to learn all about teeth, from understanding what happens when a tooth falls out and learning about potential tooth replacement and orthodontic treatments, to being able to understand the code of letters and numbers used by dentists during a routine check-up.

Learners will interact with members of staff from the university’s School of Clinical Dentistry. The programme is suitable for children, teenagers and adults who want to explore dentistry and learn about the mouth and its many important functions.

Dr Chris Stokes, a teacher on the course and a member of the Academic Unit of Restorative Dentistry, said that the programme is accessible to all and there are aspects that will interest everyone.

The university has also confirmed that there are plans to launch a range of new Massive Online Open Courses in the coming months.
