The reasons why more and more adults are opting for braces

Figures from the British Orthodontic Society suggest that 80% of orthodontists saw an increase in adult patient numbers in 2018. As more and more people choose to have braces during their 20s, 30s, 40s and 50s, it’s interesting to see why adults are becoming more open to a treatment that was once linked only to teenagers.

Orthodontic specialist, Peter McCallum, said that there are several reasons why adult treatment is becoming more popular, but perhaps the most significant is the increased interest in dental health and having an attractive smile. We take better care of our teeth than ever before, and most of us are concerned with the appearance of our smiles. Those who aren’t happy with the look of their teeth are more likely to do something about it and seek treatment than previous generations. There have also been major advances in orthodontic and cosmetic dental treatment, with the option to undergo discreet treatment a draw for many adults.

Just a decade ago, orthodontic patients didn’t have anywhere near as many options as they do today, and the fact that you can have treatment without worrying about displaying bulky metal braces every time you smile has undoubtedly had a positive impact on uptake rates. Many adults were self-conscious about their smiles, but they weren’t willing to wear the kind of train-track braces so many of us are familiar with to correct the issues. Now, patients can choose from clear braces, removable aligners and even fixed braces that are attached to the back of the teeth.

Advances in technology also mean that treatment is quicker, less painful and more convenient. There are options now that are designed to fit in with the demands of modern life, providing patients who want that dream smile with the chance to achieve it with minimal hassle. Finance options and a wider range of treatments have also made braces more accessible and affordable.

The popularity of adult treatment is also likely to be linked to a growing interest in image and also to celebrity endorsement. Numerous celebrities have worn braces, from Justin Bieber and Brooklyn Beckham to Holly Willoughby, Mel Giedroyc, Miley Cyrus, Tom Cruise and Prince Harry.
