The Queen revealed she had braces when she was younger while visiting patients at the new and improved Eastman Dental Hospital in London.

Charged with the responsibility of opening a brand new, state of the art health centre, which houses the Eastman Dental Hospital and the Royal ENT Hospital, the Queen met adults and children undergoing pioneering treatment for head and neck conditions.

During a tour of the dental hospital, the monarch was shown around the research facilities and the wards. When she was shown a model set of teeth with wire braces, she mentioned that she had braces as a child, but added that they were very different today.

The Queen was shown around the cutting-edge facilities, and she took the time to speak to patients, including 10-year-old Ilia Aristovich, who was in hospital to have orthodontic braces fitted. Having asked Ilia what treatment he was in for, the Queen responded with a warm smile, reassuring the youngster that it would be worth it. The Queen was also greeted by children waving flags and wearing crowns on the paediatric unit, and she complemented the young patients on their artistic skills before joining a creative play session. The sessions, which are attended by parents and children, help to ease anxiety and make children feel more comfortable and relaxed.

One of the final stops on the tour was the specialist audio and hearing unit, where the Queen met Lily, an 8-year-old patient who has two cochlear implants. Talking about the difference her implants have made, Lily said that she now has a birthday party for her implants every year to celebrate being able to hear. The Queen was clearly touched and said that it was a “splendid idea.”
