Her Majesty the Queen and His Royal Highness Prince Philip enjoyed a guided tour of Birmingham’s brand new state of the art dental hospital this week. They were treated to a preview of the £multi-million development, which houses Birmingham Dental Hospital and Dental School.

The land in Edgbaston, which was previously occupied by the BBC, has been converted into an ultra-modern healthcare site. The building project cost £50 million in total and the hospital and dental school are among the most advanced treatment and training facilities in Europe.

During their time in Birmingham, the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh were shown some of the many impressive and innovative training resources available at the facility, including phantom heads and moulds of teeth and gums. The Queen declared the site officially open, unveiling a sparkling plaque to commemorate the occasion. Dental instructor Philip Murphy was on hand to show the Royal visitors how the phantom heads worked. He said the Duke was particularly interested in learning all about these, as well as other educational resources on offer to students.

Chief executive of Birmingham Community Healthcare NHS Trust, Tracy Taylor, said the day marked the realisation of a long-term goal. Together, the city council, NHS, University of Birmingham and private investors have achieved their aim of creating a “superb facility” that will provide benefits for the people of Birmingham, dental students and patients from further afield for many years to come.
