Tamworth Dental Practice Welcomes Patients For Free Oral Cancer Checks

A dental practice in Tamworth opened its doors to patients last Saturday to provide free oral cancer screening.

Stonydelph Dental Practice hosted the free screening session between 10am and midday on Saturday 9th November as part of Mouth Cancer Action Month, which will run during November.

The latest figures suggest that more than 6,000 people are diagnosed with mouth cancer in the UK every year and the number of cases is rising year on year. Survival rates are also alarming, as 2,000 people die every year from the disease.

A spokesperson for the practice said that the team is supporting Mouth Cancer Action Month and the screening checks were part of a wider initiative to educate patients about oral cancer and highlight the importance of early detection. Dentists took the time to talk to patients about the warning signs of the disease, as well as performing soft tissue checks to look for changes in the mouth.

The team urged patients to look out for red or white patches, mouth ulcers, which take a long time to heal and any abnormal changes in the mouth and said that people should live by the mantle, ‘if in doubt, get checked out’.

Mouth Cancer Action Month is run by the British Dental Health Foundation and practices all over the UK are taking part in the campaign.
