Residents in Sussex are invited to attend a free mouth cancer screening session in Burgess Hill on Monday 18th November.

To support Mouth Cancer Action Month, Gateway Dental will be offering free mouth cancer checks throughout the day. A spokesperson for the Station Road clinic said that it was very important to the team to get involved in the campaign, as the majority of UK adults don’t even know that mouth cancer exists, let alone what causes it or what kind of symptoms to look out for.

Mouth Cancer Action Month is an annual event, which is run by the Oral Health Foundation and the Mouth Cancer Foundation. The primary aim is to raise awareness. Even though over 8,000 new cases are now diagnosed every year in the UK, many people still don’t know about mouth cancer. As a result, most cases are diagnosed at an advanced stage, when the chances of successful treatment are lower.

The Gateway Dental team is eager to encourage patients and local people to get behind the campaign, and screening checks can be organised over the phone. Early diagnosis can improve survival rates by up to 90%, so keeping up to date with routine check-ups, taking advantage of screening and being mouth aware are key.

The most common symptoms of oral cancer include abnormal lumps or swelling in the mouth or throat, ulcers that take a long time to heal and red or white patches in the mouth. Additional warning signs may include difficulty swallowing, a persistent sore throat, unexplained oral pain or bleeding and prolonged hoarseness.
