A survey has revealed that the majority of parents wait too long to take their child for their first dental visit.

According to a survey carried out by YouGov on behalf of Denplan, 79 per cent of parents wait for more than a year to take their child to the dentist, while 5 per cent of parents wait until their child reaches the age of 5 years old. Dentists recommend that children go for their first dental check-up at the age of 12 months old.

The survey also revealed that a large proportion of parents do not take their child for check-ups on a regular basis. Of parents aged between 18 and 34, less than half took their child for a check-up every 6 months. Of the group of parents aged over 45 years old, 75 per cent took their child for heck-ups every 6 months.

The survey also revealed that 10 per cent of parents have not taken their child to the dentist before; of this group, 15 per cent came from the South, 14 per cent came from the East and 11 per cent came from London.

The survey involved 4,116 adults and was carried out between the 14th and 23rd January 2013.
