Survey shows Scots have the Worst Oral Hygiene

A survey conducted by the British Dental Health Foundation has revealed that people in Scotland have the worst oral hygiene habits in the UK.

According to the survey, one in five Scots do not brush their teeth in the morning, with 20 percent of participants in Scotland also admitting to going without brushing their teeth for more than two days in a row.

Robert Kinloch, chairman of the British Dental Council’s Scottish Council, said that the results of the survey explain why rates of decay and oral health problems are so high in Scotland, compared to other parts of the UK.

The survey also showed that around 45 percent of Scottish people regularly failed to clean their teeth during the evening.

Dr Nigel Carter, chief executive of the British Dental Health Foundation, said that the results of the survey were worrying, as people who regularly fail to clean their teeth are increasing their risk of developing oral health problems, including gum disease, which is the most common cause of tooth loss.

In order to prevent oral health conditions, it is advisable to brush your teeth twice a day for at least two minutes each time, use mouthwash and dental floss on a regular basis and visit the dentist for check-ups every six to twelve months.
