Survey Reveals That Most Neglect Annual Dental Check-Ups

A new survey has revealed some alarming results concerning the uptake of annual dental health checks.

The poll, which was conducted by discount website VoucherCodesPro.co.uk showed that the average time between check-ups in 3 years 8 months, despite the fact that most dentists recommend at least one check-up per year.

The survey revealed that many people in the UK are waiting until they are in pain or suffering other symptoms to see a dentist, despite the fact that dentists warn that missing appointments increases the risk of gum disease and decay and can delay the diagnosis of potentially life-threatening conditions, including oral cancer.

Most people admitted that they don’t visit the dentist as frequently as they should because of cost; however, the British Dental Association has warned against cutting costs in the short-term because it will almost certainly work out more expensive in the future. Routine check-ups are available on the NHS for less than £20, while a complex course of treatment can cost around £200 on the NHS and significantly more at a private dental clinic.

Most dentists encourage patients to have a routine dental check every 6-9 months and the fact that so many people are waiting longer than this is worrying.

The poll showed that just 28 per cent of those surveyed saw a dentist at least once a year.
