A man from Sunderland has been convicted following a dental practice burglary. Wayne Carr, 29, broke into the mydentist Orthodontic Centre on Laura Street in August 2018. Mr Carr proceeded to ransack the safe, taking £850 in cash in addition to a mobile phone, a number of keys and business receipts.

Following an investigation into the incident, police arrested Mr Carr after finding a blood smear, which had been left when the intruder cut himself on a piece of glass when trying to leave the premises in a hurry. The sample was sent in for forensic analysis, and it matched police records. Mr Carr was charged, and in court, he pleaded guilty to charge of theft.

The judge at South Tyneside Magistrates Court ordered Mr Carr to pay compensation worth £2,223 to the practice owner and he was also given a 12-month community order.

Detective Constable Graeme Joyce, from Northumbria Police, described the act as “selfish” and added that Mr Carr had been thinking only of himself when he broke into the practice and stole a number of items. The incident caused the owners and members of the dental team a great deal of upset and it has taken time for the practice to bounce back. DC Joyce said that the outcome was positive, and thanked all the officers involved for bringing the “opportunistic offender” to justice.
