The findings of a study will be used to analyse the impact of the decision to stop water fluoridation in Calgary.

The new study, which will focus on children in grades 1 and 2, across schools in Calgary, will give some indication of the impact of the no vote, which led to the cessation of water fluoridation in May 2011.

Lead researcher, Lindsay McLaren, from the University of Calgary, said that it is important to note the impact of the decision at a local level and the findings of the study could form an important evidence-based resource for those making decisions about water fluoridation and oral health in the future.

McLaren said that most of the studies on this subject are out of date and it will be useful to have new evidence, which could help to influence decision-making in the future.

The findings of the study will be presented to the city council by Alberta Health Services. Medical officer, Dr Richard Musto, said that he hopes the new study will encourage a new debate on the issue of fluoridation.
