Study shows toothpaste that contains triclosan and copolymer is best for killing bacteria

A study recently published in the General Dentistry journal has concluded that toothpastes containing triclosan and copolymers are more effective than traditional fluoridate toothpaste at killing harmful bacteria.

The study trialled three types of toothpaste; two types of fluoridated toothpaste and toothpaste containing triclosan and copolymer. The toothpastes were tested on lab-grown bacteria, which is similar to the type of bacteria that thrives in the mouth and bacteria that was taken from the mouths of a number of volunteers. The results showed that the toothpaste containing triclosan and copolymer consistently outperformed the fluoride only toothpaste.

Triclosan has been proven to kill bacteria, prevent the formation the plaque and reduce the risk of conditions including gingivitis. The copolymer helps the triclosan to stay in the mouth for a longer period of time.

Brushing the teeth twice a day should be an important part of everyone’s daily oral hygiene routine; in addition to this, dentists recommend that patients floss on a daily basis and rinse the mouth out using an antibacterial mouthwash.
