Student dentists are preparing to start work at a brand new dental unit at the South Bristol Community Hospital.

The community dental unit will transfer from Bristol Dental Hospital to the new hospital in April and students in their fourth and final years will be providing basic dental services for local residents. Students have already been working at the Bristol Dental Hospital, but the new community hospital will enable them to gain valuable experience of working in a community setting and seeing patients of all ages.

Louise Nash, clinical lead, will be stocking the dental unit this week in preparation for the students to start work on April 16th. Dr Nash said that students will gain valuable experience of “day-to-day family dentistry” and have the opportunity to treat children as well as adults.

The unit comprises twenty small areas and four enclosed dental surgeries.

In addition to their clinical work at the community dental unit, students will also be playing an important role in spreading the message of the importance of good oral hygiene and oral health and will be visiting local schools and health centres to provide information about how to prevent oral health diseases.

South Bristol Community Hospital will open its doors to the first patients later this week, with the urgent care unit opening first and other departments will then open over the course of the next three weeks.
