Bridgewater Community Healthcare NHS Trust is encouraging people to give up smoking; today is No Smoking Day and the Stop Smoking team will be supported by GPs, dentists and pharmacists to try and get as many people to quit smoking.

This year, the theme is ‘swapping fags for swag’ and the team will be highlighting the financial and health implications of smoking.

Wigan’s Stop Smoking Service will be hosting events throughout the week at Wigan and Leigh College and the Royal Albert Edward Infirmary and the team will also be handing out posters to children’s centres, health centres, GP surgeries and dental practices in the area. Doctors and dentists will be supporting the campaign to highlight how giving up smoking could improve your health as well as your finances.

A smoker that smokers a packet a day could save more than £2,000 per year by giving up, as well as reducing their risk of numerous health problems, including heart attacks, strokes, cancer and high blood pressure.

Nicola Yates, from the Stop Smoking Specialist Team Leader in Ashton, Leigh and Wigan, said that 26 per cent of adults in the area smoke, but research suggests that around 66 per cent of them would like to give up. Stop Smoking Day is a chance to raise awareness of the consequences of smoking and encourage people to try and quit; support is available from GP practices and dentists and the Stop Smoking team will be distributing information about the services available to help people to give up smoking.
