Stoke dentist urges patients not to pull their own teeth out at home

A dentist from Stoke has urged patients in pain to avoid trying to pull their own teeth out at home.

Dr Zoe Wray, from Diana Dental, said that she is receiving multiple calls every day from patients with dental issues, but stressed that DIY dentistry carries risks. Extracting a tooth is particularly dangerous, as it can contribute to excessive bleeding, particularly in those who have underlying health conditions. There is also the prospect of dealing with intense pain in the absence of anaesthetic.

Dr Wray said that it is a very frustrating time for dentists, who are desperate to get back to work to treat patients in pain. She, like most other dentists across the UK at the moment, is offering advice and prescribing medication for patients with minor issues, but there are many who cannot currently be helped due to practices remaining shut. Emergency dental care is available for those with urgent needs, and dentists like Dr Wray can provide a telephone triage service to refer patients to a local urgent dental hub.

There is a great deal of debate going on about dentistry at the moment, with many dentists eager to get back to work. As yet, there is no set date for reopening practices, and anyone who does need advice is encouraged to contact their regular dentist or to call NHS 111.
