A Royal Navy dentist from St Agnes, Cornwall, has arrived in the Philippines to help victims of typhoon Haiyan.

Jenna Murgatroyd, a dental officer in the Royal Navy, arrived in the disaster-struck nation aboard HMS Daring on Monday night. The warship set sail from Portsmouth and will be joined by HMS Illustrious in the coming days.

Lieutenant Murgatroyd said that the exact details of the mission are unclear at the moment, but the officers will be using their medical and dental training to help injured and ill survivors. The Royal Navy inquired as to whether the ship and the crew on board would be of use last week and when they heard the answer, they set sail straight away.

Lieutenant Murgatroyd said that the team had been briefed quickly and told that the main aim was to provide emergency help to those with traumatic injuries and to ease swelling, stop bleeding and try to save as many lives as possible.

This is the first relief mission the 29 year old is taking part in and she said that she is relishing the opportunity to help people who are in desperate need and eager to use her skills to try and make people feel more comfortable.

Typhoon Haiyan hit the Philippines on the 8th November, causing 200mph winds and widespread destruction; it is believed that more than 3,500 people have lost their lives and more than half a million people have been left homeless. The UK has already pledged millions of pounds worth of aid and charities are working with military personnel to try and distribute aid packages and basic supplies and prevent the spread of disease.
