Southport Beautician Fined For Providing Tooth Whitening Treatments

A beautician from Southport has been fined after providing tooth whitening treatments without being registered with the General Dental Council.

Elaine Taylor-Valles offered tooth whitening treatments at her Lord Street salon, Diamonds, despite not having the legal right to do so. All practitioners offering whitening services must be registered with the General Dental Council. Miss Taylor-Valles was caught after a customer made a complaint after having her teeth whitening treatment at the salon.

A spokesman for the GDC said that the case was investigated after a complaint was received from a member of the public. Miss Taylor-Valles said she was a “fully qualified beautician”, but this position is not accepted by the General Dental Council and therefore she should not have been offering whitening treatment.

Miss Taylor-Valles was fined £1,200 at Preston Magistrates Court and ordered to pay £3,277 in court costs.

The GDC has urged anyone who is interested in having whitening treatment to see their dentist; it is important that dentists carry out a thorough examination of the mouth to determine whether the patient is a suitable candidate for whitening.
