Smoking causes teeth and bone loss

A New Jersey dentist has said that smoking can lead to bone and tooth loss.

Dr Sherzoy, who practices in Bergen County, has been highlighting that smoking not only causes heart disease and cancer but gum disease too.

People who smoke are at increased risk of developing oral diseases which can lead to tooth loss and jaw bone erosion.

Smoking also causes bad breath, tooth discoloration, inflammation of saliva producing glands, increased build-up of plaque and increased risk of developing leukoplakia (white patches within your mouth).

It can also delay healing after dental surgery, lower success rate of dental implants and increase the risk of developing oral cancer.

Dr Sherzoy, who has worked in Bogata for more than 16 years, urged smokers that notice any oral abnormalities to get screened for mouth cancer.
