A visitor to Bristol Zoo was greeted with a rather unexpected sight when she reached the gorilla enclosure.

Miriam Haas watched in wonder as the zoo’s female gorilla, Kera, appeared to floss her teeth using a bramble branch. The 55-year old, who was visiting from Devon, said that she amazed to see the western lowland gorilla taking such care to keep her teeth clean, but admitted that the thought of flossing with a bramble made her wince.

Ms Haas, a photographer, captured incredible images of Kera flossing her teeth and the pictures have now been published in national newspapers.

Western lowland gorillas are one of the only species of gorilla kept in captivity. They are endangered and they are native to Angola and central Africa.
