Slough dental practices host free fun days for children

A group of dental practices in Slough invited local children to take part in a fun-filled open day earlier this week to celebrate half-term.

Starting Well, which operates a chain of practices in and around Slough, invited children under 5 and their parents to take a look around and participate in fun, educational activities on Tuesday 18th February. Dental teams at Abbey Dental Surgery, Farnham Road Dental Practice, Smile High Street and Smile Cippenham Dental Practice welcomed visitors as part of an initiative to introduce young children to the dentist.

Starting Well is working with Slough Borough Council, local schools and public health teams in the area to promote dental health programmes for children and raise awareness of the importance of good oral health.

One of the most important aims of the scheme is to encourage parents to take their children to the dentist on a regular basis. Ideally, kids should have a routine check-up every 6 months from the age of one. NHS dental care is available for children free of charge.

Open days like those run by Starting Well are an excellent way to make going to the dentist fun for young children and to enable them to get used to the sights, sounds and smells of the dental practice. The goal is to show children that there is nothing to be scared of and to show that having a dental appointment can actually be really enjoyable.

Councillor Natasa Pantelic, cabinet member for health and wellbeing, urged parents to take advantage of open days and dental schemes and encouraged those who haven’t been to the dentist in a while to use half-term to book an appointment.
