A dental hygienist from Sleaford, Lincolnshire, is delighted after being informed that she will be a torch bearer for the Olympic torch procession.

Julie Hanks, who is also the co-founder of Sleaford Striders Athletic Club has been selected to carry the torch on part of its journey, but she will not find out exactly where the torch will take her until a month before the games open in London.

The torch is due to arrive in North Kesteven on the 27th June, one month before the opening ceremony at the Olympic Stadium in East London.

Julie, a hygienist at Eastgate Dental Surgery, said that she devotes a lot of time to athletics and founded the junior division of Sleaford Striders with her husband. Initially, there were around 10 runners, but the club now has more than 70 juniors attending on a regular basis. Julie has competed in the Great North Run and successfully completed three marathons to raise money for Breakthrough Breast Cancer and organised a charity ball to raise funds for Bridge 2 Aid, a dental charity which provides care and supplies to communities in Tanzania.

Julie said that she was “delighted” to be nominated and overjoyed at being selected. She was nominated in recognition of her charity work by June Jackson, her running partner. Julie said that she is going to savour every moment of the 300 metre run.
