A Simplyhealth survey has revealed a shocking lack of awareness about the importance of oral health among UK males.

The survey, which involved 2,101 males, revealed that a large proportion of men are unaware of the link between oral and general health.

The survey showed that 59 per cent of men had seen a dentist within the last 12 months, while 95 per cent say they brush their teeth twice a day. However, when it came to asking about the link between oral health and medical conditions, awareness was very poor.

Only 28 per cent of those surveyed realised that there was a link between oral health and cardiovascular disease, while 94 per cent of people were unaware of the link between poor oral health and dementia; 1 in 5 people did not know about the link between diabetes and an increased risk of gum disease and 89 per cent were unaware that poor oral health can increase the risk of pancreatic cancer.

The survey also revealed that many men were unlikely to change their oral hygiene habits despite being aware that poor oral health can increase the risk of serious illnesses; 26 per cent of people said that they would not take better care of their teeth and gums even if they were aware that better oral health could decrease the risk of life-threatening illnesses.
