Silver Nanoparticles to Stop Denture Infections
Difficult to treat yeast infections of the mouth are soon to meet their match with the use of silver nanoparticles.
Caused by Candida glabrata and Candida albicans, these forms of yeast infection cause oral thrush and dental stomatitis, which affects 7 out of 10 denture wearers and are usually very difficult to effectively treat.
However, the University of Minho research team behind the new nanoparticle treatment are hoping that their research upon the anti-fungal properties of the silver nanoparticles will help stop the development of such problems.
The team are hoping to move their findings upon the effectiveness of silver nanoparticles on yeast infections, into use with mouthwash and other dental products and the team even want to add the nanoparticles to the actual denture materials, but as of yet the treatment is still in the early stages of study.
