Shortage of dentists in Isle of Man

Sample News Big

A shortage of dentists in the Isle of Man has forced the Department of Health to introduce a new priority care system.

The new system will ensure that patients who actually need treatment are treated before those who are due to visit their dentist for a routine check-up. Patients who wish to arrange an appointment for a check-up may be forced to wait longer than usual, as priority will now be given to patients in need of treatment.

Over the course of the last four months, four government contracted dentists have stopped working in the area, meaning resources are now stretched. The Department of Health is currently trying to fill the vacant positions but patients have been warned that they may have to wait a little longer for routine dental check-ups until the positions have been filled.

Carolyn Lewis, the service manager at the dental department, said that despite the shortage of dentists, patients will not face a significant change in the standard of care; only those with good oral health will be asked to wait a little longer than usual and it is hoped that the vacant positions will soon be filled and the appointment system will return to normal.

Patients are advised to contact their local dentist or the health department for further details.
