Shetland Dental Practice to Reopen Next Week

NHS Shetland has confirmed that the practice on St Olaf Street will reopen next week.

The practice has undergone an £80,000 renovation and has brand new equipment, including new dental chairs and state of the art IT equipment. Simon Bokor-Ingram, director of clinical services at NHS Shetland said that all three chairs will be in operation and the clinic will open its doors to patients on Monday.

Mr Bokor-Ingram said that the chairs will be staffed by locums at first and he hopes that this will help to tackle the waiting list, which has been building up since the practice closed when Alan Owen retired earlier this year.

Once the practice is up and running, staff will be rotated occasionally, so that specialist services will also be available, including orthodontics. A dental hygienist will also be joining the team. Mr Bokor-Ingram said that the practice will offer a comprehensive range of dental services and added that the aim was to eradicate the waiting list.

The practice was originally due to reopen in October after Mr Owen retired in September, however, it took longer than anticipated to get hold of new equipment and the surgery will now open again on Monday.

John McBeath, NHS Shetland Estates Manager, said that programme had been very tight and it was difficult to get everything done in such a short space of time but admitted that the surgery was now looking very good and was ready to provide excellent services for local people.
