A Sheffield dentist swapped her dental drill for a DIY toolkit to finish off renovations, which ground to a halt as a result of the lockdown.

Principal dentist at Sharrow Vale Dental Care, Galer Farrer, said that she had no choice but to try and finish the work off herself after renovations were put on hold at the practice during the first lockdown in March 2020. Work on extending the practice was in full swing when the Covid-19 crisis hit, but everything soon came to a standstill when the country was plunged into lockdown. The extension involved plans to create two new treatment rooms.

When the lockdown was announced and most of the tradesmen who were working on the site had to down tools, Galer took it upon herself to try and complete as much of the work as possible. The practice was receiving calls and queries from patients on a daily basis and Galer knew that she needed to get the surgery ready to open as soon as the government gave the green light. While taking calls and responding to emails, Galer painted, cleared rubbish and filled tips and used woodworking skills to finish off jobs that had been started by construction workers prior to the Covid-19 outbreak.

Thanks to Galer’s hard work and dedication, the practice was ready to reopen in June and the feedback from patients has been very positive.

On top of swapping dental drills for construction tools and treating patients in a pandemic, Galer and her team are now preparing for a 10 km charity run for Weston Park Cancer Charity.
