Sheffield Dental Nurse Prepares for Charity Mission in Cambodia with Dentaid

A dental nurse from Sheffield is preparing to visit Cambodia as part of a charity project organised by Dentaid. Catherine Ashley from one80dental centre will be accompanied by her daughter Abbey on the two week mission.

Catherine was inspired to take part in the project by Abbey, who spent two weeks working there last year. Although it was hard work, Abbey found the experience incredibly rewarding and the mother and daughter team is now looking forward to jetting out to Cambodia and helping people who are in desperate need of dental care.

During Abbey’s stay in Cambodia last year, the team of volunteers treated around 600 people per week and most were children who had extensive decay. Access to dental treatment is very limited and children and adults have very little awareness of oral hygiene. Many people don’t even own a toothbrush and for the vast majority, the charity’s volunteers represent the first dentists they have ever seen.

The duo need to raise a total of £5,000 to fund the trip and Abbey and Catherine are both working hard to raise funds and also let people know about the amazing work carried out by the charity. Dentaid organises volunteer projects all over the world and targets areas where dental health is a particularly concerning issue.

During their trip, Abbey, Catherine and the rest of the team will be providing basic treatment to ease pain and prevent further infections, educating people about oral health issues and giving out supplies.
