Sedation dentistry ‘helped patient overcome fears’

A patient terrified of the dentist has slept through cosmetic dentistry treatment, reports Female First.

Sarah Couling told the magazine that she had always hated her small, uneven and discoloured teeth but was too scared to have work done.

After seeing the results of a friend’s veneers, the 23-year-old trainee driving instructor approached a London cosmetic dentistry clinic in hope of overcoming her fears.

The clinic offered sedation dentistry, allowing her to sleep through the treatment but avoid the drowsiness and risk associated with general anaesthetics.

Ms Couling attended four separate sessions to have veneers fitted on six upper front and back teeth, which adjusted her bite so that her new smile was fully on show.

Commenting on the results, she said: "I used to feel I always had to have my hair in place and makeup on wherever I went to compensate for my teeth – but now with a fantastic smile, I can go out barefaced with hair tied back as I have a great smile."

Dr Anoop Maini of the British Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry told the publication that sedation dentistry is not a new technique, but is not widely offered by clinics.

The Daily Telegraph reports that Brits spend around £360 million on cosmetic dental treatments every year.ADNFCR-1374-ID-18550897-ADNFCR
