The Scottish Health Secretary has visited a new dental surgery in Whitlawburn.

Nicola Sturgeon visited the new surgery, which is located on Western Road, on Tuesday. During her visit, she took time to talk to practice owners, Omar Iqbal and Hassan Ali and said that the new surgery would make a significant difference to people in the local area. Prior to the opening of the new practice, some residents were faced with a long trip to neighbouring towns of Rutherglen or Cambuslang to see a dentist.

The Deputy First Minister said that she was glad to support the opening of any new NHS surgery and claimed that the new Whitlawburn practice will enable patients to access first class NHS dental care on their doorstep.

Whitlawburn is undergoing a period of regeneration and the practice is the first dental service in the area. Omar Iqbal and Hassan Ali went to university in Glasgow together and decided to open the practice in Whitlawburn after research revealed that 70 percent of people living in the area were not registered with an NHS dentist. They said that their main aims are to raise awareness of oral health, encourage people to use NHS services available to them and promote good oral health.

Councillor Claire McColl said that the opening of the new practice was “wonderful” and would make a huge difference to local people, as many people in the area are living on tight budgets. Also the public transport network is not the best, so having a surgery on the doorstep will make life much easier for the local residents.
