A dental receptionist from Saffron Walden has smashed her steps challenge to raise money for Brain Tumour Research.

Cindy Whife, from New Road Dental Practice, set herself a goal to walk 10,000 steps every day in February to raise money for charity. Despite storms and unpredictable weather, Cindy blitzed the total, completing an impressive 321,000 steps in 28 days.

Cindy set out on her charity steps challenge with her trusty companion Milly the cockapoo for company. Together, the duo walked every day to raise money for a charity that is close to Cindy’s heart.

In 2013, Cindy was diagnosed with a brain tumour after experiencing double vision and poor balance and coordination. After investigations and tests, doctors found a brain tumour the size of a tangerine and Cindy underwent surgery during a complex 11-hour procedure. Cindy has had regular MRI scans since treatment and although there are a couple of small tumours, they are currently not of concern.

Cindy admitted that she used to find it very hard to do 10,000 steps, but she is now able to complete the daily challenge with ease. She enjoys being outside and walking with Milly and her fitness has improved dramatically.

So far, Cindy has raised almost £950 for Brain Tumour Research and she is hoping to reach the incredible milestone of £1,000. Cindy’s partner, Malcolm Domb, has also completed the 10,000-step challenge, raising £800.

Community development manager for Brain Tumour Research, Charlie Allsebrook, said that the 10,000 Steps a Day in February Challenge has “gone amazingly well.” People have raised thousands of pounds for the charity, but they have also connected with others who have been through similar experiences via the charity’s Facebook group.
