A Sacramento non-profit organisation is set to expand its services to include paediatric dentistry.

The Effort currently provides addiction services, mental health care and general health care for young people and children and four clinics will soon offer paediatric dental services.

The new services will be funded by a grant from the First 5 Sacramento Commission; the organisation uses tax from tobacco sales to fund charitable projects and causes and will donate 2.95 million dollars to help The Effort build new dental clinics.

The new dental clinics will be built next to existing medical centres; the aim of the project is to decrease the prevalence of tooth decay and oral health problems amongst young children aged 5 or under. The new clinics will open in Oak Park, North Highlands, East Sacramento and South Sacramento. The Oak Park clinic will open first and should be up and running in six weeks time.

The clinics will be open to all children in Sacramento County; the clinics will treat children without insurance, as well as those with policies and children from low income families will also be welcomed. It is expected that the four new dental clinics will treat 11,000 local patients each year by the year 2015.
