The Rochdale Oral Health Team is raising awareness of oral health and oral hygiene as part of National Smile Month.

National Smile Month is a national campaign, which is run by the British Dental Health Foundation to try and promote good oral health and encourage people to adopt healthy dental habits. The campaign is running from the 15th May until the 15th June.

Andrew Forest, from the Oral Health Team, said that statistics in Rochdale were worrying, with rates of decay amongst children at a very high level and it is therefore extremely important that dentists, dental staff and oral health team members work to encourage children to take care of their teeth and gums from a very early age.

The aims of National Smile Month are to encourage children to adopt good habits, educating both children and adults and raise awareness of the link between good oral health and confidence and success. The theme of this year’s campaign is the Smile Factor.

Good oral health is not only important for good general health, but it is also linked to high levels of confidence and self-esteem and good performance levels at school.

Events and activities will be taking place over the next few weeks to celebrate National Smile Month.
