A retired dental nurse aged 103 is one of many people who have benefitted from a Christmas hamper campaign set up by lottery winners in York.

Since they scooped the jackpot in 2005, Elaine and Rob Leason have been using their good fortunes to support others. At Christmas time, Elaine and Rob send out hampers full of festive treats to the elderly and lonely in York as part of a programme run in partnership with York Neighbours.

Among those who received a delivery through the scheme is 103-year-old, Eva Sessions. Eva was a dental nurse and she set up a clinic to provide free dental treatment for the most vulnerable people in her local community during the Second World War.

Eva said that York Neighbours has been a “real lifeline” and added that she would be very lonely without the phone calls and messages she receives from the team.

Eva was thrilled to get a visit from Santa and his elf recently and she was even more delighted to see that they came bearing a hamper full of gifts. She thanked the lottery winners, Elaine and Rob, for their generous gift and said she couldn’t wait to tuck into the treats, adding that Christmas would be a very special time for her because of the presents.

Elaine was overjoyed to see the smile on Eva’s face when she delivered the hamper and said that it was important for her and her husband to do something at this time of year, as it can be so difficult for people who feel lonely or isolated.

The lottery win has enabled the couple to devote time to supporting charities and both Elaine and Rob said they were honoured to be teaming up with York Neighbours to run the hamper scheme this year.
