Resin fillings may be more expensive, but they last a great deal longer, it has been claimed.

The American Chronicle stated that silver amalgam fillings are being replaced by resin fillings, which are tooth coloured and therefore appear more natural.

These types of fillings also involve less health risks than silver, it added, explaining that the amalgam materials can lead to mercury poisoning, a common cause of diseases such as Parkinson’s.

"Resin fillings are becoming the norm," stated Dr Kevin B Sands, a cosmetic dentist in Beverly Hills. "They are better for you and much better looking."

The publication commented that although resin fillings can cost between $150 (£77) nd $200 per filling, as they last up to ten years, they prove less expensive than traditional fillings in the long run.
